Mental Health Specialist,

L. Cooper, PhD
to
visit Hiawatha Behavioral Health
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – On May 14 and 15, Children’s Mental Health Specialist, Janice L. Cooper, PhD will
be at Hiawatha Behavioral Health conducting interviews as part of a National
Study. Dr. Cooper is a health
services researcher who specializes in children’s mental health.
Her research is focused on quality of care for children and youth with
attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cultural and linguistic
competence and mental health financing. She
is a board member of the American College of Mental Health Administration (ACMHA)
and a member of the Multicultural Advisory Committee of the New York State
Office of Mental Health. Dr. Cooper
also teaches a graduate course in Child Health Policy at the Mailman School of
Public Health-Columbia University.
Dr. Cooper will be interviewing Hiawatha Behavioral Health
staff, physicians, stakeholders, and consumers for research regarding “Unclaimed
Children Revisited-Michigan Case Study.” This study is designed to update “Unclaimed Children: The Failure of Public Responsibility to Children
in Need of Mental Health Services”, which became a rallying point for
policy reforms in the field of child and adolescent mental health.
The current study includes a number of state case studies and will
supplement and enrich the larger national study.
The findings from Michigan will inform Unclaimed
Children Revisited and will provide information on what it takes, in a state
context, to ensure that all children in need
receive appropriate mental health services.
Hiawatha Behavioral Health uses the CAFAS, which is an
approved measurement instrument, to determine the needs and functioning level of
children. Dr. Cooper will be
evaluating the effectiveness of the CAFAS in providing services for children and
their families. Also, Dr. Cooper
will conduct a “round table” discussion with Hiawatha Behavioral Health
staff and other stakeholders regarding children’s mental health issues.
Hiawatha Behavioral Health is pleased to have been
selected to participate in the study and be a part of a state-specific report on
the status of child mental health outcome management projects and related
policies in Michigan.
Hiawatha Behavioral Health is dedicated to serving the
citizens of Chippewa, Mackinac and
