Crisis Intervention

 

Mission Statement: 

The Hiawatha Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Program  strives to provide high quality services aimed at the assessment and immediate stabilization and / or referral for any individual or family experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and / or emotional distress, at any time of the day or night.

Program Description: 

The Crisis Intervention Program operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  We at Hiawatha Behavioral Health believe that Crisis Intervention Services take precedence over all other agency programs and services, in immediately responding to persons in crisis situations.  The safety of consumers and staff members will be the critical factor in determining where an individual deemed to be in danger to self or others, will be evaluated.  The Hiawatha Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Program is designed to quickly assess the problem, decide on the appropriate course of action, and bring together the necessary services and providers to stabilize the situation as soon as possible.

Program Goals: 

A.  Will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

B.  Will be provided either by face-to-face or telephone contact.

C.  Will be provided by Qualified Mental Health Professionals (Q.M.H.P.).

D.  An Initial Crisis Intervention Plan will be established upon contact, for each person served.

E.  The program will have procedures for provision of mobile services or establish linkages with other community resources, for the provision of mobile services.

F.  Written emergency procedures will be in place, which include:

    1.  Screening for medical conditions

    2.  Making referrals to emergency medical services, when indicated

    3.  Identifying personnel trained in emergency procedures

    4.  Use of personnel, other than physicians that can perform special procedures and the circumstances and degree of supervision required to perform these procedures

    5.  Handling standing orders

G.  The program will have the capability to access inpatient services or less restrictive alternatives.

H.  Procedures will be in place to involve signigicant others, with the informed consent of the persons served.

I.  Annual training will be proved to qualified personnel regarding:

    1.  The appropriate use of community resources

    2. Crisis Intervention techniques

    3.  Procedures for involuntary hospitalization

J.  Debriefings regarding emergency situations will be conducted on a regular basis.

K.  The program will request permission to follow up with the persons served.

L.  Utilizing applicable laws regarding confidentially, the program will provide follow-up with at least 10 percent of the persons served to determine:

    1.  Whether further services are needed

    2.  Persons served who are considered at risk

    3.  Collecting clinical information that compares the current status of the persons served to their status at discharge

M.  The program will assess efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction of persons served by the Crisis Intervention Program and use the information gathered to improve the quality of services.
